Using 8 cameras and AI, diseased plants with, for example, the Y virus or leaf roll are detected. As soon as the system detects a diseased plant, the machine stops and a blue spot indicates the plant in question. The plant can then be removed. An efficient method with minimal driving movements in the field.

With the Selecto Vision, Vegniek is taking potato selection to a new level. This optical roguing cart makes it possible to accurately identify and remove diseased potato plants. Using eight cameras, computers and AI algorithms, the crop is scanned to assess whether any diseased plants are present. As soon as the system detects a diseased plant, the machine stops automatically and the plant is highlighted by a blue spotlight. The plant can then be removed efficiently, with as few driving movements as possible in the field.

The Selecto Vision ensures that the selection process is more consistent, less labour-intensive and less reliant on experienced selectors. With the Selecto Vision, the seed potato grower simply has a choice of three ways of working: selecting the potatoes themselves whilst the vision system observes and learns, working in tandem with the vision system, or allowing the system to carry out the selection work entirely independently. This does not mean that the grower’s expertise is lost. On the contrary: the grower uses their own experience to configure or train the system as required.

With the Selecto Vision, Vegniek is responding to one of the biggest challenges facing seed potato cultivation: a growing shortage of skilled workers, whilst quality requirements are actually increasing. The Selecto Vision ensures that potato selection becomes more accurate, simpler and better equipped for the future. Using data and AI, diseased plants are identified at an increasingly early stage, enabling them to be removed sooner and limiting the spread of disease. Through objective assessment throughout the season, the quality of the seed potatoes can be systematically improved.
