Gea Smart Sealing System maximizes productivity and reduces waste

The well-established GEA SmartPacker CX400 and SX400, are now equipped with an innovative Smart Sealing System with recyclable sealing strips for significantly longer lifetime than other technologies on the market.

The new system avoids the need to replace Teflon tape every few hours thereby improving productivity, reducing downtime, reducing Total Cost of Ownership and improving pack quality.  The Smart Sealing System is developed for use with PE mono materials, laminates, including recyclable material structures such as BOPE, MDOPE, PP-based laminates and paper laminates.

Until now, the heated jaws of the sealing systems on vertical packing machines were protected by Teflon tape to prevent sticking, especially when running low-cost PE films. The new system uses metallic aluminum strips, coated with a non-stick coating PFAS free. In tests they ran for over 800,000 bags without changing, significantly reducing downtime and labor costs.

Reduced downtime and easily operating to save money

Replacing Teflon tape takes around 5 minutes with conventional technology.  That represents approx. 400 packs lost per 8-hour shift.  The Smart Sealing System allows the packer to run almost continuously, thereby eliminating lost production.

When the sealing strips do eventually need changing, this is a simple ‘click and go’ operation that can be performed by the operator, no requirement of special training and tools.  The cutting knife can also be replaced easily without the need for special tools. 

Improved productivity and pack quality

The increased sealing pressure applied to each seal and the reduction of the cooling time for each cycle allows a faster running speed that increases machine output by over up to 20%, improving Overall Equipment Efficiency while enhancing seal integrity and pack quality.

Sustainability

The sealing strips, when replaced, can be easily recycled. Also, the increased sealing pressure avoid leaking packs which reduces food and material wastage for a more sustainable production process. 

Flexibility

The SMART Sealer has been designed for use on PE materials where the risk of sticking is greatest.  However, it can also be used to seal OPP (Oriented PolyPropelyne), paper, laminate and mono films. As the sealing strips are applied to both sealing jaws, the system can be used in applications that require a double heating system. This allows users to switch products easily.
